Everything announced at PlayStation’s State of Play (May 2024)

Sony’s PlayStation State of Play May Showcase 2024 may have been announced on short notice, but within its 35-minute presentation we got a look at a slew of brand new PS5 games coming in 2024 and beyond. Two new PSVR2 games were also announced here, as well as the surprise return of one of PlayStation’s most beloved mascots, Astro Bot.

Whether you missed the showcase or just want a convenient recap of all the trailers again, here’s everything that was announced at the Sony State of Play May Showcase.

Concord

First up, we got a long-awaited look at Concord, Firewalk’s upcoming PvP, in the form of both a cinematic sketch and a proper gameplay trailer (embedded below). The energy of the Great Guardians of the Galaxy, this. Lots of big guns, lots of colorful moons and planets, and a very chatty cast. Could this be the perfect second course after Helldivers earlier this year? We’ll find out when it launches on PS5 and PC August 23, 2024.

Origin of Dynasty Warriors

Giant army battles? Check. Sharp heroes on horseback cutting through waves of soldiers with a single stroke of their sword? Double check. Yes, that’s Dynasty Warriors alright, and honestly, it’s nice to see Omega Force return to their main series after spending a few years ridiculously applying their over-the-top (but oh-so-satisfying) Warriors formula to Zelda, Fire Emblem and Persona. Dynasty Warriors Origins certainly looks ambitious, what with its hundreds of on-screen soldiers waiting to be mowed down like bales of human grass, but dare I say it also looks like one of Omega Force’s most technically proficient games? We’ll find out for sure when it launches 2025.

Infinity Nikki

Described as an open-world dress-up adventure, Infinity Nikki is all about styling yourself as you make your way through the vast world of Miraland with your cute kitty bud in tow. Aside from the light platforming, it also looks like you’ll be using the powers of your various outfits to fight big monsters, chase sheep, take pictures, ride through the air with giant flower stalks, and give dogs fluffy a little sponge bath. . Adorable stuff. There is no set release date yet, but there will be a beta test sometime in between July and September later this year.

Ballad of Antara

Just in case Shadow of the Erdtree doesn’t meet your gruesome and enigmatic beast quota for the year, Ballad of Antara is an upcoming fantasy action RPG from TipsWorks and Infold Games. You also won’t be traveling through this strange and mysterious world alone, having a small child strapped to your back the entire time, it seems. It’s currently unclear what role your little friend plays at the moment, or indeed how the other protagonists hinted at in the reveal trailer below come into play, but hopefully it won’t be too long before we find out . Entering Antara’s ballad 2025.

The behemoth of Skydance

From the developers of The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Skydance’s Behemoth is a new PSVR2 game set in an icy mountain kingdom known as the Forsaken Lands. After its initial cinematic teases of 2022, tonight we got a look at a proper game. In addition to turning his regular-sized enemies into gridlock through his hand-to-hand combat, you’ll also be trying to avoid being blocked by the larger hooves and stiff legs of his titular behemoths. Shadow of the Colossus, eat your heart. That will come later autumn.

Alien Rogue Incursion

Another one for PSVR2 fans here, we got a very brief, 53 second glimpse of Alien Rogue Incursion in action as well. Set on the planet Purdan, it looks like you’ll be exploring the very, very dark and not at all creepy ruins of a crashed spaceship, and yes, trying not to get chewed up by the resident Xenomorph. Truly the perfect Christmas present for all PSV2 owners as it comes a long way Holidays 2024.

Marvel’s Rivals

Announced earlier this year, Marvel Rivals is another PvP shooter that begs the question, what if Overwatch was made up of Marvel? Its big selling point is that certain groups of heroes (and villains) can team up to perform massive combo attacks to nuke both your opponents and the local environment. However, will it be enough to overcome my extreme Marvel fatigue? There is no set release date for this yet, but there will be a closed beta coming to PS5 July.

Where the winds meet

Now this is more like it. We’ve seen a few glimpses of Where the Winds Meet at this point, but this latest trailer really gets the pulse racing with its big, juicy sword fights. It’s basically a montage of a lot of neat-looking fights, and yes, it includes a battle against a very large fish and a glowing wooden bird robot. Some of the weapons look pretty tasty too. A paper umbrella lined with throwing blades, you say? Well, don’t mind if I do. Sadly, there’s no release date for Where Winds Meet yet, but the trailer wants to assure you that it’s still very much ‘in development’.

Until Dawn

A new trailer for the PS5 version of Until Dawn, which (whisper it) looks pretty much identical to how I remember the original looking, to be honest. Still, it’s nice to be able to play this on modern consoles, and it’s getting a bonus PC release as well. Both versions are coming this autumn.

Path of Exile 2

Another take on Grinding Gear Games’ take on Diablo, Path of Exile 2 is a moody, top-down action RPG. Over the course of two minutes, we get a whistle-stop tour of some of his key classes, as well as a look at the tons of magical spells you’ll be using to rid his dungeons of various evils. The big news from this latest trailer, however, is that the console version will add co-op, as well as crossplay and cross-progression. It will also have an early access launch on all platforms (including PS5). the end of 2024.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Following its initial reveal last December, we got another great big look at Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds. Lots of new, big, bad beasts here, including a furry dog lion boy who also resides inside a giant electrified sandstorm. What a pleasure. Some fan-favorite monsters also make an appearance here, and we get a proper look at mounted Wilds fights as well. Lots to enjoy here for longtime Monster Hunter fans. All I need now is to look at my trusty double blades and we’ll be golden. It’s coming in 2025.

Astro Bot

Now that’s how you finish a showcase. It’s been a hot minute since we last saw a game from Team Asobi, but Astro Bot is finally back and reporting on a cute and light-hearted assignment. Part 3D platformer, part on-rails space shooter and part celebration of all things PlayStation, this ‘super-sized’ Astro Bot adventure will see you traverse over 80 dazzling worlds that all seem to have their own unique hooks and special powers to be enjoyed. My personal favorite? That big, giant sponge. I mean, boy. Error, ed. In any case, Astro Bot looks absolutely cool and I can’t wait to play it when it launches on PS5 September 6, 2024.
